Mogul craftsmen originally crafted Pashmina scarves for Emperor Akbar, and in the early 19th century, these shawls became a favorite of Empress Josephine, the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. For nearly four centuries, Nepali artisans have been weaving their magic and passing down the tradition through generations. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that Pashmina began to be commercially spun and widely produced in Nepal. Today, the exquisite craftsmanship and classic finishing touches have made Nepali Pashmina products popular globally.

Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, with its beautiful panorama, culture, heritage houses, and Pashmina growth, has drawn tourists from Europe and America, enticing some to start their Pashmina businesses in Nepal and sell them in their home countries. Pashmina products are also recognized as excellent gifts by loved ones in Europe and America, with many leaving Nepal with at least two Pashmina products. Nepalese Pashmina shawls, scarfs, wraps, and blankets are so irresistible, one can’t help but want to indulge in them.

How is the Pashmina Shawl produced?

Pashmina wool is acquired from goats that shed their coat every winter, providing around 80-170 grams of wool. In the spring, the undercoat is also shed, and it is collected by combing the goats rather than shearing them, which is typical for other wool collection methods. The Changpa, a nomadic group living in the Himalayan region of Nepal, Tibet, Ladakh, and Mongolia, produces pashmina wool in a severe climate where temperatures can drop to as low as -40°C.

Raw pashmina is exported to spinning mills where specialized teams of craftsmen and women traditionally carry out combing, spinning, weaving, and finishing by hand. The primary production center for pashmina shawls is in Kathmandu, and it takes approximately 60 hours to create a single piece of pashmina shawl.
